When should I start wearing a wig with alopecia?

We recommend to clients starting to wear a wig once you start to become self-conscious about you hair loss.

For many, wearing one can be an effective way to manage the condition, as there is currently no consistently effective medical treatment available.

What is the best type of alopecia wig?

Toppers and half wigs are recommended if the hair loss is localised to only the crown and upper parts of the head.

    Toppers & Half Wigs

A wig topper is a hairpiece designed to cover bald or thinning patches on the scalp. This discreet option is suitable for people with patchy hair loss, such as those caused by conditions like alopecia or medical treatments like chemotherapy.

These pieces are attached with clips and pins, providing coverage to the top of the head while allowing natural hair to blend in seamlessly.

Wig toppers provide an easy solution for women looking to add volume and create a fuller look without having to wear a full wig. They are an effective way for clients to disguise any baldness or hair thinning patches and can be worn comfortably throughout the day.

Real Human Hair Wigs (Natural Hair) v Synthetic for Alopecia Sufferers

For clients suffering from alopecia there are two main wig options available: real human hair wigs and synthetic wigs. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Human hair wigs offer a more natural look and are often heat resistant, giving the wearer greater flexibility when styling their hair. On the other hand, they are significantly more expensive than synthetic wigs.

Synthetic wigs are a much more affordable option, but may not always look as natural as human hair wigs.

Ultimately, choosing between the two depends on how much money you are willing to spend, and how natural you would like your wig to look. For an ind depth comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of human hair v synthetic hair click here.

    Can bald women wear wigs?

Baldness can be a cause of stress and anxiety for many women. Fortunately, bald women can wear one to improve their appearance and a boost to self confidence.

It is in fact easier for bald people to wear a wig as they are worn under a cap.

To wear a wig over your own hair it is necessary to ensure the hair is smooth and flat underneath the wig, and covered with a wig cap.

How do you secure a wig on a bald head?

If you have total hair loss, securing a wig on a bald head can be done using tape or glue.

After that, a wig cap should be placed over the head, covering ears and pulled back to the hairline.

Is it easier to wear a wig with a shaved head?

A wig can look more natural lying flat on a shaved head than on one with hair and allows for a softer top to protect the scalp. So, for many clients wearing a wig with a shaved head may be easier and more comfortable.

What wigs are best for receding hair?

For those with a receding hair, lace toppers provide some of the most natural looking hairlines, while monofilament wigs offer the best uniformity and realistic-looking appearance

Lace front wigs are an ideal choice for those with hair loss in the front or a receding hairline.

Can wigs make hair loss worse?

Wearing a wig can be beneficial for those who are managing their hair loss, as it provides protection to the hair underneath.

Although some sources claim that wigs can lead to traction alopecia over time, this is not true for the majority of people.

Wigs do not stop hair growth, and it may help protect your natural hair from damage and breakage if it is properly looked after.
